Gronlid Central School students show extra motivation with North East SPCA pet drive

Students Grade 1 through 3 at Gronlid Central School are putting their paws to work for animals at the North East SPCA’s Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter.

What began as a cross-curricular activity of studying pet rescue and shelters, Nadine Hiebert’s class was inspired by a children’s book Madeline Finn and the Shelter Dog.

In the book, the main character decides to hold a reading drive and organizes a group of people to read to dogs. Afterwards, Hiebert’s students asked if they could do the same.

“We already planned on going to the shelter for a tour and it would be easy to read to them,” Hiebert said. “Then we did more research on the shelter and the kids asked if we could do more than just read. Then we led them down the road of finding donations.”

Hiebert got in touch with the North East SPCA and received a list of the shelter’s needs, which includes food, toys, containers, kitty litter, and blankets.

Most of the items brought in for the North East SPCA have come from Hiebert’s students.

“They’ve been gathering supplies from home and going shopping with their families for new supplies,” she said. “It definitely doesn’t have to be anything new. A lot of the stuff kids have brought in are just things they found at home that their animals don’t need anymore.”

The students have until Nov. 8 to continue spreading the word of their pet drive and bring in items for the North East SPCA. Hiebert said anyone wanting to donate used or new items can drop them off at Gronlid Central School.
