A Melfort group is taking donations to assist victims of a cyclone in the southern hemisphere.

The Rotary Club of Melfort has set up a Shelter Box in Melfort Mall from Thursday, March 21 to Saturday, March 23 to collect donations for Shelter Box Canada.

Workers from Shelter Box Canada are on the ground delivering shelter boxes to Southern African countries such as Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. All are affected by Cyclone Idai – a tropical storm that has killed and displaced hundreds of people.

Gailmarie Anderson, the public relations contact for the Rotary Club of Melfort, told northeastNOW the Rotary Club has always partnered with Shelter Box Canada to deliver aid in a time of crisis.

“When we set up a shelter box in times of crisis we don’t have any goal in mind,” Anderson said. “People in Melfort and area have always been very generous to donate and we appreciate any amount that people can give.”

A shelter box consists of an all-weather tent that houses about 10 people with a separation curtain, water purification system, solar lights, cooking utensils, and blankets.

Anderson said a shelter box costs C$1,200, while a water purification kit and mosquito net each cost $180 and $35 respectively.

The Rotary Club of Melfort will be in Melfort Mall from Thursday, March 21 to Saturday, March 23 to collect cash and cheque donations for Shelter Box Canada.
