Curling Season Approaching

Melfort Curling Club gearing up for 2019/2020 season

Nov 2, 2019 | 8:00 AM

Snow is on the ground, which means curling season is near.

On Nov. 4, the Melfort Curling Club will kick off it’s 2019/2020 season. The fun league that runs on Monday’s and Tuesday’s is back for another year, as well as Tuesday and Thursday Senior curling, and the Cash League on Thursday’s. Club Manager Gerald MacGillivray said there’s always room for more teams.

“We always take teams,” he said. “If you can only curl half a season or whatever, no problem. We have a special for first time curlers, you save $110 on your membership for the first year.”

He added that when it comes to numbers for teams, they’ve got about the same amount of teams as normal. MacGillivray said they will “hold their own” when it comes to registration.

The club’s first bonspiel will be held on the weekend of Nov. 22 to 24 with their Open Cashspiel. Meanwhile, the club always try’s to host some sort of provincial tournament every year. Last year it was the Club Championships. The year prior to that it was the Provincial Scotties. This season, the Melfort Curling Club will play host to one of the two Under-18 Men’s Qualifiers in Saskatchewan.

MacGillivray also encouraged people to get out and try curling. There will be a few ‘Open Curling Nights’ this year as well starting on Nov. 13.

“Anybody that’s wanting to curl, there’s lots of people out there that have curled before that have stopped,” MacGillivray told northeastNOW. “Come on out, it’s good excercise, and there’s lots of room.”
