Melfort Amateur Dramatics presents Gibson and Sons

Nov 7, 2019 | 3:01 PM

Melfort Amateur Dramatics is down to the last week of rehearsal before this season’s dinner theatre performance.

Gibson and Sons will be hosted in the Kerry Vickar Centre CJVR performing arts theatre on Nov. 14, 15, and 16.

Director Mel Annand said the club has been operating for almost thirty years now.

“We have a MAD clubhouse building on Main St. and each year we have to raise a certain amount of money to keep the building open, pay the bills, and one of the ways we do that is dinner theatre,” Annand said.

Maintenance and updates for the 50-year-old building include lighting systems and roof repairs that needed to be done over the summer. Annand said that Affinity Credit Union generously assisted with those repairs.

Rehearsals and some smaller performances take place in that space but the bigger shows are moved into the KVC to allow for more attendees.

“We often try to do two or three things a year,” Annand said. “We did travelling theatre last year where we moved from one venue to another with some one act plays,” Annand said.

This year’s production is a romantic comedy.

“It is the story of two competing funeral homes and the romance part is one of the funeral directors orders himself a mail-order bride from Russia,” Annand said.

The Thursday night show for Gibson and Sons is sold-out but tickets are still available for the Friday and Saturday performances. Christmas supper with all of the trimmings by Page Seven Catering plus the show is $49 a person.

Some of this year’s actors and actresses were also in last year’s play with some newcomers as well.

“It’s changing all the time, we are always doing auditions for plays so we are interested in people coming out to be on stage,” Annand said.

He added that backstage people are also needed to make the shows a success.’

Next week’s show has been in the works for several months and the cast is ready and excited to show off their hard work.
