‘She hurts when they hurt’: Kelvington girl helping out various animal organizations

Raising $5,500 for various animal resuce organizations is amazing, but how about a 12-year-old doing it?

That’s the case case for 12-year-old Zoey Sauer of Kelvington, who began fundraising for various animal shelters, and rescue agencies in 2015. Her mother Tracey said it started early for Zoey.

“It started with Zoey while her sister was volunteering in Saskatoon at the SPCA,” Tracey said. “They’ve always loved animals, so then Zoey thought ‘we should do something here’. She loves to cook, so she started making her own dog treats to sell.”

Through that initiative, Zoey raised over $1,000 for the Saskatoon SPCA, and her passion, and fundraising expanded from there.

In 2016, Zoey and her sister raised over $1,100 for Size Small Dog Rescue in Saskatoon. That came from a supper at their local Chase the Ace, and a few donations on top of the suppers that were sold.

The next year, Zoey and her sister were fundraising again, this time for Paws and Claws Animal Rescue. Through selling pies, the two girls were able to raise a total of $16,000.

In total, Zoey and Tracey said they believe they have raised around $5,500 in total. That includes their most recent fundraiser with the Prairie North Co-Op. Through a barbecue with the Co-Op, and more pie sales, nearly $2,000 dollars was raised for the Northeast SPCA in Melfort. Tracey says it’s great to see her daughter having so much unconditional love.

“She hurts when they hurt,” Tracey told northeastNOW. “It’s really nice to see that your kids are compassionate, and care about something that they know can’t really give back to them. But they like to give.”

Zoey has already decided on another fundraiser for the Northeast SPCA this summer. The Prarie North Co-Op has once again decided to also help out with a barbecue at the end of August. Tracey said she is extremely proud.

“It’s a fun family thing to do together,” she said. “For the barbecues, friends come and help us. It’s just nice to see the smile on her face when she knows she’s finished her job and every year she’s got a little bit more and it encourages her to raise a little bit more the next year.”

When asked about why she volunteers, and fundraises, Zoey said “Because I’ve always loved animals, and always wanted to help them, because there is so many in need.”
