Provincial Volleyball

Local communities hosting girls provincial volleyball tournaments

Volleyball teams from across the province will be battling to become provincial champions this weekend.

From Friday to Saturday the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletics Association is holding their provincial championship at schools across the province. Locally, there are a couple of schools hosting tournaments, and a bunch of local schools participating as well.

The 1A tournament will be held this year by Muenster. Head Coach Joel Taphorn said they’re excited for the tournament to take place.

“We do it for the kids, and to provide opportunities,” he said. “Our community has been fabulous as far as building excitement around this, we usually draw pretty good crowds.”

Not only will there be volleyball at Muenster School, but to accomodate the tournament, St. Peters college will also play host to a few games on the weekend.

Unfortunately, Muenster did not qualify for regionals this year, but still got their spot in provincials as hosts of the tournament. Taphorn said it’s going to be a great weekend of volleyball, and it’s anybodies tournament to win.

“The competition here this weekend is going to be tough,” Taphorn told northeastNOW. “We’ve played a couple of the teams already and we have our hands full. But, it’s provincial weekend, you’re hosting in your gym, it’s a totally different atmosphere and it’ll be good competition.”

LeRoy and Rose Valley are the other two local teams participating in the Muenster hosted event.

This year’s 2A Girls tournament is being hosted by Foam Lake Composite School. Head Coach Graham Farrell said they’ve received great support, not only from their school population, but the community as well.

“We’ve got a small school,” Farrell said. “And it’s really required everyone to come together and put this on. We want to make sure we do a good job because it’s a once in a lifetime thing.”

Farrell added this years tournament is wide open, and anyone could win the provincial title.

“Having seen teams throughout the province, we’ve seen some of the teams that are coming, and we haven’t seen some of the other teams,” he said. “But there might’ve been 15 different teams that all would’ve had a chance at medalling this weekend, and only 10 are going to be here.”

Wakaw and Birch Hill are local schools participating in the tournament. The Foam Lake Community Hall will also have games being played there along with the school.

The 4A Girls tournament is being held in Fort Qu’Appelle and Ballcarres with local teams from Melfort, Nipawin, and Humboldt participating.

On the boys side, their regional tournaments take place this weekend. Plenty of local teams are in action in those tournaments.
