Wireless Capacity Upgrades

Local areas to receive wireless improvements

Dec 6, 2019 | 11:03 AM

An upgrade on bandwidth capacity is coming to a number of local communities.

SaskTel announced today that 4G LTE improvements are coming to 19 towers in mainly rural areas of central and eastern Saskatchewan.

The news release said SaskTel is installing additional LTE carriers on each of the towers, increasing LTE data capacity by up to 100 per cent, which will allow people to use their smartphones without being slowed down by network congestion.

“Coverage and capacity are two sides of the same equation and the quality of wireless services available in rural communities depends on both,” said the Honourable Don Morgan, Minister Responsible for SaskTel in their news release. “With Wireless Saskatchewan, SaskTel has tackled many of the province’s gaps in coverage and with this announcement they are ensuring rural locations continue to keep pace with increased demands for wireless data.”

Local communities due for an upgrade include Englefeld, Lanigan, Tisdale, and Melfort, which is receiving multiple capacity improvements to the existing tower.

Installation work starts on the first of the towers this month, with the upgrades expected to be complete by next April.
