Saskatchewan simultaneously the coldest and one of the warmest places in Canada
The province of Saskatchewan experienced wildly different temperatures Sunday, Dec. 30.
Key Lake was a bitter -46.4 degrees Celsius. The low temperature was brisk enough to make it the coldest place in Canada.
On the flip side, Maple Creek was the hottest place in Saskatchewan, at a pleasant 4.6 degrees Celsius. The warmest place in Canada was North Cowichan in British Columbia at 10 C.
Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist, Natalie Hasell, said the cold air originates in the north. “This dome of cold air has come down from the Arctic and has settled over the central and eastern prairies,” she said. Hasell added the warm temperatures in Maple Creek are due to a low-pressure system traveling from the south that’s bringing with it large amounts of warm air.
Hasell has assured residents the cold weather in the Prince Albert region won’t stick around. “It really is a snap as opposed to a spell,” she said.
