‘I think it’s great for the retail market’: Edibles and related products could be be in shops soon

Some different cannabis products could be hitting shelves very soon.

The Government of Saskatchewan announced on Monday, Dec. 16 that products such as edibles, extracts, and topicals could be available in local cannabis shops in the near future.

The announcement comes about two months after it was announced edibles and related products would be legally available.

Rod Malberg is the co-owner of Homestead Cannabis in Tisdale. He said the new products will be good for the market.

“I think it’s going to be great for the retail market that’s for sure,” he said. “Each edible is going to be a precise amount, and it’ll be very easy for the non-smoking consumers to be able to get a product that they can totally enjoy.”

The provincial government also put out a few warnings about edibles, and cannabis in general.

A release mentioned the minimum age for buying and consuming cannabis is 19, there is a zero tolerance rule for drug-impaired driving, and more. Malberg said edibles are a much different product than the typical smoking cannabis.

“It’s going to take an hour or two, an hour to feel any effect from it at all,” Malberg told northeastNOW. “And it’s going to take two hours before you feel the full effect. So take one edible or one portion of an edible and give it a couple hours.”

Malberg added when shops first opened and cannabis was first sold, a main issue was pricing, but he said it’s starting to come down. He expects the edibles and related products to be a bit more economically priced to start out.

Overall, Malberg said they’ve gotten good responses from consumers about their shop in Tisdale.

“Haven’t heard any negative complaints,” he said. “Everything is just positive input about how nice it is when they walk into the store. It’s very bright, it’s very professional. The biggest problem they have is the price of their product, but that’s kind of dictated by our suppliers.”

He added the transition into selling edibles, extracts, and topicals won’t be seamless, but it’ll all work eventually.

“It’s a brand new product,” Malberg said. “So, expect some glitches that’s all. It’ll do nothing but get better.”
