Mustangs Fall to Hawks

2019 schedule ends with Hawks defeating Mustangs

Dec 22, 2019 | 9:32 AM

The home teams were successful in this past weekends home and home set between the Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks.

After a 5-2 Mustangs win on Friday, the Hawks got their revenge on Saturday with a 2-0 win, snapping their five game losing skid.

Melfort was outshot 32-24 in the game, but Assistant Coach Trevor Logan said there were some positives.

“I’m not totally disappointed in the game,” Logan told northeastNOW. “I thought we were there, we had a chance if we get a bounce or something. But at the end of the day I think they just outworked us a little bit longer than what we put in tonight, and kudos to them.”

There was no scoring in the first period, but Austen Flaman’s seventh of the year made it 1-0 just 40 seconds into the second period on the powerplay. The teams went back and forth in the period before Jeremy Bisson made it 2-0 with just over three minutes to play in the frame.

Melfort pressed in the third, but couldn’t get one to go. Ross Hawryluk stopped 24 shots in the win. Logan said they needed to create a bit more offensively.

“I don’t think we got enough zone time and we didn’t get enough traffic in front of Ross [Hawryluk],” Logan said. “He’s a big goalie, seemed like he saw a lot of shots, didn’t leave a lot of rebounds out there so we definitely needed a little bit more traffic.”

Shawn Parkinson stopped 30 of 32 for Melfort.

The rivals will meet again on Jan. 3 and 4 to kick off the 2020 portion of the schedule.
