City of Melfort installs new ice skating surfaces for winter season

The City of Melfort is providing a couple of additional spots to go ice skating this winter.

An outdoor rink in front of the former Chamber of Commerce building in Spruce Haven park is ready for a game of shinny.

“We have benches and everything out there so you can get your skates on comfortably,” said Leonard Whitney, facilities manager for the city. “It’s a nice big ice surface so we hope to get lots of people out to get some skating in over the holidays.”

The city equipped the rink with lighting so it can be used after-dark. There is also water and power which made the location ideal.

“We thought we would try it out for this year and see how it goes but I think it is definitely a good location,” Whitney said.

A second surface is being installed at the Burke playground but that one won’t be ready until after Christmas.

“We will put on a few more floods before that one will be skateable,” Whitney said.

There was a rink at the Burke playground last year. Whitney said it was well received by the community, particularly by residents on the south side who aren’t able to make it all the way over to the far west side of Melfort to use the Spruce Haven or Kinsmen rink.

“The Kinsmen do a great job of looking after that rink and it has the boards so it is sometimes used more for hockey rather than just skating,” Whitney said.

He added that there will be nets out at the Spruce Haven ice surface but it will be more geared toward skating.

The Crokicurl rink at Memorial Garden will remain open for holiday fun as well.

“We will leave rocks out over the holidays so that if anyone is interested in using the Crokicurl surface, those will be out,” Whitney said.

The fire pit is set-up with wood available on site to have a warm-up fire while enjoying the winter activities.
