Sports Year in Review: Kelly Chase brings Stanley Cup home to Porcupine Plain

Dec 29, 2019 | 10:00 AM

northeastNOW is taking a look back at the biggest and most interesting sports stories of 2019, as selected by our sports reporters Mat Barrett and Aaron Schulze:

The National Hockey League’s (NHL) biggest prize coming to Porcupine Plain makes the Top 12 this year.

Former NHLer and Porcupine Plain, Sask. native Kelly Chase brought the Stanley Cup to his hometown in October after being a part of the St. Louis Blues organization in an off-ice role.

Chase played nearly 500 games in the NHL, but was never able to win it as a player. However, back in October, Chase told northeastNOW, bringing the cup home now gives it a different vibe.

“I certainly waited a long time to be a part of it, and I wish I could have brought it here as a player for them to enjoy,” Chase told northeastNOW. “But I guess now it just means there’s a broader spectrum of kids that get to see it and take a look at it, and touch it and get a picture of it, and hopefully aspire to win it.”

The event was held at the Community Hall in Porcupine Plain as somewhat of a fundraiser for Porcupine Plain Minor Hockey, as well as the arena in town.

President of Minor Hockey Brianna Cole said events like those really help them keep hockey going in the community.

“We rely mostly on fundraising,” she said. “We try to keep our costs low to the parents, registration fees and stuff, so we do a lot of fundraising to cover almost everything.”

Some things in the rink they were hoping to fundraise for is boards for Novice hockey half-ice games, and a new boiler.
