Sports Year in Review: Saskatoon sports legend Bowers passes away

Dec 30, 2019 | 12:00 PM

northeastNOW is taking a look back at the biggest and most interesting sports stories of 2019, as selected by our sports reporters Mat Barrett and Aaron Schulze:

Back in September, we learned of the passing of Kelly Bowers, a Saskatoon sports legend with connections to CJVR in the northeast.

In the 2000s CJVR had the broadcast rights to Saskatoon Hilltops and University of Saskatchewan Huskies football games. Neil Shewchuk was the play-by-play-man and Bowers was the colour commentator for many games.

Shewchuk said Bowers was known through the Saskatoon sports scene for his booming voice and infectious personality. He told northeastNOW back in September, some people would say everyone knew when Kelly Bowers was in the room.

“Kelly was the room,” Shewchuk said.

Bowers was heavily involved in the Saskatoon sports scene. He played a large part in football, but was also involved in basketball, tennis, and wrestling among others.

“Kelly was just totally invested in high school athletics and watching young athletes mature into adults,” Shewchuk told northeastNOW. “And to compete at the CIS level.”

Bowers has been honoured multiple times for his contributions to the Saskatoon sporting scene. In 2011, he was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame as a builder. Prior to that, he received the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association Award of merit in 2007, and in 2001, he was named the Kinsmen Sportsman of the Year.
