Sports Year in Review: Melfort Comets win 4A Nine-Man provincial title

Jan 1, 2020 | 12:00 PM

northeastNOW is taking a look back at the biggest and most interesting sports stories of 2019, as selected by our sports reporters Mat Barrett and Aaron Schulze:

The Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) Comets football team makes the top stories of 2019 after winning their third provincial title in eight years.

On Nov. 9, the Comets defeated Martensville 51-15 to claim the title. En route to the final, MUCC beat Humboldt in the quarter-finals, and John Paul II from North Battleford in the semi-finals. After their win, Head Coach Dave Rogers said his team was ready to play, and they showed it the whole game.

“[Our players] came today prepared mentally with the intensity to impose their will on their opponents,” Rogers told northeastNOW. “We asked them if they were ready to play football and it was ‘yes coach’ in a loudness and timbre in the response that I hadn’t heard all season, maybe not in a long time. It showed from the first whistle through to the end of the game.”

During the regular season, the Comets only allowed 98 points in six games while scoring 372 points. They were a perfect 6-0 against teams from Nipawin, Tisdale, and La Ronge.

This season was also the first for the Comets in the 4A Nine-Man ranks for provincials after playing in 3A Nine-Man for the past few season.

Last year, the Comets fell in the quarter-finals to Lumsden, and with 12 graduating players this season, expectations were high for the team.

“The leadership we see from our older kids – especially our Grade 12’s – are for high expectations and a successful season,” Rogers said before the season began. “We play six games against three quality opponents and we’ll have to use those opportunities to improve and get us ready to get into the provincial playoffs.”

There could also be a few of those graduating grade 12 players that continue to play football at a higher level. Rogers mentioned after the provincial final that Lance Barnett, Mason Gordon-Danku, and Ty Milne are just a few of those players.
