Snowy day

Significant snow expected throughout northeast

Much of the province will be shovelling today.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a snowfall warning for most of central and northeast Saskatchewan, including the Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin and Wakaw areas.

“[The northeast will] probably get a few hours of [heavy snow]. You may get a break for a few hours, and then the whole system is expected to wrap around and keep sliding southeastward, so it’s going to be kind of on-and-off throughout the day,” Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Terri Lang told northeastNOW.

The wind gusts are also expected to hit 30 km/h or more, leading to potential blowing snow and visibility issues on highways in the region. Lang recommends people check the Highway Hotline before they travel, as conditions can change significantly in a matter of minutes.

Upwards of 10 to 15 cm of snow is expected in the areas under the snowfall warning, but Lang said it’s difficult to predict snowfall amounts, especially with the windy conditions.

“Some of the drifts are 20 centimetres deep, while some are half a centimetre deep,” Lang said.

The snow and wind will taper off throughout the evening, and colder temperatures will return.

Temperatures will stay below normal for tomorrow and Friday, while warming up a bit on the weekend with periods of snow expected on both Saturday and Sunday, according to the forecast.

The deep freeze is expected to greet us next week, with high temperatures struggling to hit -27 Celsius both Monday and Tuesday, with overnight lows well below -30 C.
