Kwasnica to lead Humboldt’s new Protective Services Department

The City of Humboldt has created a new Protective Services Department.

Fire Chief Mike Kwasnica heads the new department, and adds the title of director of protective services to his resume.

“It’s something that’s been in the works for about a year about changing different job positions, and putting all the protective services under one umbrella,” Kwasnica told northeastNOW.

The new department will house bylaw enforcement, the RCMP liason, the fire department, and emergency management.

Kwasnica said the development of the department should help the city stay organized.

“Trying to make sure we’re covering what we need to cover, as well as [occupational health and safety] and safety for all our workers for the city,” he said. He added being under one umbrella will allow them to better assess if there are areas they need to approve.

Many larger communities in the province, including Melfort, have changed to a protective services model.

“It’s just a natural progression that when your city or your community gets to be a little larger, that this is just something that generally starts to happen,” he said.

The change is in its early stages, and Kwasnica said everything will remain status quo as far as the other departments for the time being. Reviews will take place to see where improvements can be made and if any changes need to take place.

City Manager Joe Day said in a news release that with the changes, the city “now better utilizes the skills and competencies of our existing complement of staff that will enhance these service areas.”

The new Protective Services Department came into effect Jan. 1, 2020.
