Melfort hosting over 130 Girl Guides for district rally

Feb 7, 2020 | 1:23 PM

Melfort will play host to over 130 Girl Guides and leaders from the district throughout the day tomorrow.

The Girl Guides’ district rally invites members from Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin, and St. Brieux for a full day of fun and learning.

Unit 1 leader Rene Claypool said it is important to get the whole guiding district together.

“It gives opportunity to come together and realize that even on a local level, we are bigger than just our little groups that meet on a weekly basis in our local communities,” Claypool said.

The Melfort unit hasn’t hosted the rally for nine years, with the most previous being held in Tisdale four years ago.

“It’s been quite some time and these don’t happen every year and require a lot of work and organizing and money,” Claypool said.

The event is funded in large part by the sales of Girl Guide cookies sold in the district.

“The Girl Guide organization teaches the girls a lot about having a voice and taking on leadership, exploring, taking part in science and technology and helping others,” Claypool said.

While the rally is happening, the girls are also taking part in a service community project by bringing in donations for the North East SPCA.

On top of the events for the day which include a mini-spa, karate, and swimming and more, the pathfinders will travel to a farm to learn about dog sledding.

The theme for the weekend is adventure.

“This really is a great chance for comradery, and help girls really look forward to planning their own futures and the differences they can make,” Claypool said.
