SaskTel introduces infiNET service to Melfort

Feb 19, 2020 | 5:00 PM

Residents in Melfort may soon have faster Internet speed.

SaskTel’s infiNET service, which the company calls “Saskatchewan’s fastest fibre optics network,” is now available in certain areas of Melfort.

“It will now be available in areas of Melfort that have aerial fibre, and that’s where we’ll start deploying,” SaskTel Director of External Communications Michelle Englot told northeastNOW.

The service will eventually be available city-wide.

Englot said infiNET has speeds of 300 Megabits per second, allowing subscribers to surf, stream, and share content much faster. She said their maxTV television service will allow subscribers with infiNET to connect up to seven set-top boxes with HD and recording capabilities.

Mayor Rick Lang said in the SaskTel news release that it’s “exciting to hear that SaskTel infiNET is now available to the citizens of the City of Melfort.”

“This service is cutting edge and a huge improvement to our city and we thank SaskTel and the Government of Saskatchewan for their commitment to improving the everyday life of the people of Melfort and indeed the entire province.”

SaskTel also has plans to expand infiNET to communities including Humboldt, Nipawin, and Tisdale.

“This is a program that will take us to 2026 to get fibre deployed in all of these areas,” Englot said. “However, we do understand that customers are seeking faster speeds and more bandwidth requirements for running different applications and downloading.”

Englot said the program is a $670 million investment, and the undertaking began in 2011. The infiNET service is now available in the province’s nine largest cities and a few smaller communities, including Rosthern.
