Open house to recognize Melfort’s historic post office window replacement

The Melfort Historic Post Office will have its doors open to celebrate the recent window replacement project.

The city will host the event on March 6, from 2 p.m to 4 p.m., to recognize the window replacement, along with the unveiling of the donor wall inside.

Director of Development, Planning, and Community Relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW the historic post office received funding through the federal government’s Legacy Fund. He said the project took the better part of two years to complete.

“We’ll be unveiling the donor wall because this project has been successful because of the support of the public and their generous donations,” he said. “We’ve created a historic postal box donor wall that will be revealed at this coming event.”

Tours will be held during the open house. The Northern Lights Quilt Guild is hosting a quilt show, and the Celtic duo Ben and Anita will perform.

The donor wall will be unveiled at 3 p.m.

Lutz said the goal of the project was to replace the century-old windows and keep the same look.

“We wanted to make sure that we stayed true to the original look of the building and that we also met the requirements of the heritage standards for renovations to historic places,” he said. “The windows that were put in there were made to replicate the original windows.”

Lutz said they are pleased at the work of the contractor that did the window replacement, the consultant that assisted, and the manufacturer of the windows themselves.

“These windows are energy efficient, they are also maintenance-free on the exterior, and we expect that they will be serviceable for the long-term future of that building,” Lutz said.

The come-and-go open house is free to attend, and everyone is invited.
