SGI encouraging drivers to turn on their lights

Feb 25, 2020 | 2:26 PM

Turn on your lights.

A caller into the northeastNOW newsroom Tuesday morning said she almost struck two vehicles during some snowy weather because their lights were not on.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) is reminding motorists to keep their lights on at all times.

“It’s really important to see and be seen, and headlights help you do both,” SGI Media Relations Manager Tyler McMurchy told northeastNOW.

McMurchy said drivers need to make sure their headlights are on, especially when visibility is less than ideal.

“We really advise people not to rely on daytime running lights because some vehicles don’t have taillights on when the daytime running lights are being used in daylight,” McMurchy said.

He said SGI’s social media feeds are quite active with people asking them to remind drivers to turn on their lights.

“I would say it’s right up there in the top five pet peeves of drivers is other drivers not having their headlights on, especially when the conditions are not great when it comes to visibility,” McMurchy said.

Perhaps counterintuitively, drivers will actually see better having their lights on the low-beam setting rather than using high-beams, McMurchy said.

Lights should be on, and clean, according to SGI’s Tyler McMurchy. (Cam Lee/northeastNOW Staff)

The warmer weather has led to more road slush and salt, which can make your vehicle dirty. McMurchy reminded drivers to keep their headlights and taillights clean to improve visibility.
