North East SPCA adjusting to COVID-19 pandemic

Mar 25, 2020 | 5:00 PM

The North East SPCA (NESPCA) is another local organization adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter in Melfort is taking a number of steps to reduce the risk of transmission.

An update from the NESPCA sent to northeastNOW said “access to the shelter will be restricted to essential personnel, volunteers, and service providers, such as animal control officers.”

Shelter manager Kristy Mason said they are open to accepted adopters only.

“We don’t allow…visitors and that to come in, our volunteer list is limited right now just to make sure that people that are high-risk are not coming in and getting exposed. We want them to stay home and stay healthy,” Mason said.

All of the shelter’s adoptable pets can be viewed on their Facebook page and their website, along with Adopt a Pet.

Adoption applications can also be found on their website, and Mason said they try to streamline the process so successful applicants can pick up their pets quickly to take to their forever home.

There are a number of ways you can help the SPCA during this time.

“We’re always accepting volunteer applications, but right now we don’t have a whole lot for people to do just because we don’t want a whole bunch of people in [the shelter],” Mason said.

The SPCA is still accepting financial donations at this time, and Mason said donations of other kinds are also welcomed.

“Pet food and kitty litter, any supplies, we’re always accepting them,” Mason said.

For more information, you can call the shelter at 306-752-7722.
