Wakaw/Hoodoo Fire Department bringing birthday cheer to local children

Mar 31, 2020 | 1:00 PM

While the COVID-19 pandemic has led to social distancing, something that is being missed out on by some children is their birthday parties.

The Wakaw/Hoodoo Fire Department is doing their part to make birthday’s memorable.

“[The families] private message us with the date, and the child’s name,” Fire Chief Ray Baumann said. “We’re going out with a couple of firefighters and giving them a little present and singing them happy birthday.”

Baumann said they’ll come to the house in one of the trucks with the lights on as if responding to a call. The crew is also decked out in bunker gear.

We’re making sure “the kids aren’t feeling left out because they can’t have their birthday party like they normally would,” Baumann told northeastNOW. “It’s something a little bit different for them at this time.”

Families can contact the department through Facebook.

Baumann added members continue to work as normal during this time, but with stricter measures in place. He said while it’s hard to practice social distancing while on a call, when they return they clean more diligently and washing their hands more.
