The Emporium on Burrows in Melfort closing up shop

After just four years in business in Melfort, the Emporium on Burrows is closing their doors.

There are many compounding factors that have led to the decision to close up shop.

Owner Gloria Carrier told northeastNOW retail is a tough business to be in especially with people being able to easily shop online but luckily they own the building the clothing retail store is located in.

“We actually had an offer on it,” Carrier said. “We always had thought if the building sold, we would move into a smaller space because this is a pretty big building for what we are doing.”

Carrier added with the challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was time to retire.

“It was tough before and the store has always held it’s own but has never really made money but it always takes three or four years for a business to start making money,” Carrier said. “With this COVID though it was just kind of the nail in the coffin, it is going to be a tough go for small business and I just don’t know how it is going to work for some people.”

Carrier is in the process of selling out her clothing items by posting them on Facebook and offering curbside pick-up.

The store will be able to re-open to the public on May 19 as part of phase two of the Saskatchewan Re-Open plan but with strict rules.

“There will be no trying on and no returns, so it’s going to be a tough time to try to have a clearance sale but we will do the best we can and hopefully get everybody some good deals and clear out the store,” Carrier said.

The new owner will get possession at the end of May at which time the Emporium stock will move into the basement of the building to continue to clear out items. Carrier will need to be entirely out of the building by the end of August.

“I want to thank everyone that has supported the Emporium in the past and we are really going to miss serving the community. I have met a lot of wonderful people and am really going to miss it,” Carrier said.
