Kelvington Food Bank receives donation from Prairie North Co-op

The Kelvington Food Bank recently received a donation from Prairie North Co-op to help out during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Co-op donated $1,000 dollars to the food bank that operates out of the basement at the United Church in Kelvington. Prairie North Co-op Operations Manager Ryan Schedlosky said the pandemic has affected the food banks’ ability to help those in need.

“They lost some ability to raise funds and donations for their local food bank,” he said. “And so when we heard that, we asked how we could help out and they wanted to put boxes together.”

The boxes would include items like pasta, canned goods, fruit, eggs, bread, a voucher for four litres of milk, and more.

Schedlosky said this is the second donation that Prairie North has done with Kelvington, as they also donated a number of turkeys during Easter. Donating to the food bank is just one relationship they’ve had in their trading region.

“Kelvington is a big part of our Co-op and they serve a pretty big trading area with that food bank,” Schedlosky told northeastNOW. “And so it’s just part of who we are and part of something that we feel is pretty essential to make sure we help out with.”

Schedlosky added that this donation will help keep the food bank going right now, and in the future when government funding may end.

“I think that’s also trying to do a bit of forward-looking,” he said. “To make sure we set them up to hopefully be able to sustain themselves going forward as well.”

Kelvington Food Bank Volunteer and Co-ordinator Bernie Toth said in a release “anyone who shows up does not go away empty-handed.”

The Kelvington Food Bank is open every second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 10 to 11 a.m.
