Humboldt hosting firework display as part of Canada Day celebrations

Drive-in firework displays seem to be the trend for Canada Day this year with restrictions still in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The City of Humboldt is inviting residents to park in the Uniplex North parking lot, Quill Centre, or Humboldt Co-op lots to watch the display at around 10 p.m. on July 1.

Programs and Special Events Manager Jocelyn Doetzel said they are scaling the event back and staying focused on safety.

“We usually have things like mini-golf and bowling but those are all still closed so we aren’t able to do that,” Doetzel said. “There are also usually cupcakes and speeches but we will have those available online and on radio stations instead.”

Speeches will include words from local dignitaries.

The day will start with free golf at the Humboldt Golf Course which will run from 7 a.m. to noon.

A house decorating contest will also be held with a reverse parade. Residents can decorate their home in red and white and then submit their photos to the City of Humboldt contest page from June 22 to 29. A public vote from June 30 to July 2 will determine the top three houses for gift cards to local businesses and other prizes.

A community map will be available on the city’s website on June 30 for residents and visitors to host their own reverse parade.

During the day, residents are encouraged to get active.

“All of our parks and playground structures are open and our disc golf course is also open so just get active in the community,” Doetzel said.

Spirit Week starts on June 28. Sunday is pajama day, Monday is wacky hair day, Tuesday is jersey day, Wednesday is red and white day, Thursday is silly socks day and Friday is dress like a tourist day.

“It’s nice that we can be still having something for people to do but just what we are allowed to do,” Doetzel said.

Fireworks will be launched from the uniplex at dusk and those attending are asked to remain in their vehicles throughout the show.
