Humboldt approved as eligible assistance area under PDAP

The City of Humboldt has been approved as an eligible assistance area under the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) after rainfalls in the area caused flooding.

The first major rainfall took place in early June which prompted a state of emergency. While the ground was already saturated from that storm, Mother Nature hit Humboldt hard again on June 30 with about two inches of rain in about an hour. That caused more flooding and damage to some residents’ homes.

PDAP helps cover off uninsurable damage caused by disasters. The majority of damage in this case is likely to basements in the area.

“Overland flooding typically hasn’t been an insurable loss,” City Manager Joe Day told northeastNOW. “It means that for some people, if they have $20,000 or $30,000 worth of loss because of basement damage, there is a chance that perhaps PDAP could fund a good chunk of those repairs.”

Day said the city is appreciative of the assistance they will be receiving. Most of the funds will be going to the residents of Humboldt as earlier in the week when the city applied for the relief, Mayor Rob Muench stated that city buildings were fortunately not damaged from the storms.

Now that Humboldt has been approved for some assistance, it is now in the hands of the residents to apply. Day said there is information on how to access the funding on the city’s website.

“At City Hall, we will have application forms for people to come in and pick up,” he said. “And they can return those forms directly to the province or bring them back to City Hall and we can forward those off to the province.”

Day said residents can also go to the provincial website for more information on PDAP.
