Hudson Bay Heritage Park opening on Tuesday

Jul 20, 2020 | 5:00 PM

The Hudson Bay Heritage Park is set to open for the first time in 2020.

The park, which normally opens in May, had been closed for the entire year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But they will re-open Tuesday, July 21, as museums were allowed to open again during Phase 4.2 of the provincial government’s Re-open Saskatchewan Plan.

There have been some changes to their hours of operation.

“Normally we’re open seven days a week, but this year we’re changing our hours [to] Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and we’ll be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” park manager Brooklyn Schade told northeastNOW. “So we’ll only be open three days a week for the rest of the summer, so about the end of August.”

Schade said part of the reason they’re open less often is they were only able to receive government grants to hire two part-time staff members.

While Schade said the museum isn’t always busy, there are a few COVID-19 based restrictions and changes they are implementing.

“We are only allowing one group of people in our office at one time just because it’s a smaller area, and then we are going to be spacing out the tours,” Schade said. “If groups come in close together, we’ll be asking them to wait and let a group go first in a designated pattern…throughout the park.”

Groups will have instructions on what order to go into each building, according to Schade.

Unfortunately, the park was forced to cancel this year’s Heritage Days event, which is normally held in August, and serves as one of the major fundraisers for the park. Schade said they still hope to hold one fundraiser later this summer.

“We plan on hopefully opening our corn maze, which we opened last year for the first year,” Schade said. “We’re hoping that we can, in September, open our corn maze if the weather co-operates and lets our corn grow.”

You can learn more about the park, or ask any questions, via their Facebook page, or call Brooklyn at 306-470-7567.
