City of Melfort now allowing credit card payments

Sep 16, 2020 | 5:00 PM

Residents of the City of Melfort will soon be able to pay with their credit card at city hall.

However, it will come at a bit of an extra cost. Due to the credit card companies charging the city 1.42 per cent for credit card transactions, the city has enacted a 1.5 per cent “convenience fee” to cover those costs.

Mayor Rick Lang said the rounding up to 1.5 per cent is just for some simplicity.

He said talk about paying for things like bills, taxes, or any other outstanding fees to the city, by credit card has happened for some time, saying that it was mainly a “we had not done it before” but he’s pleased it’s here now.

“It’s taken a while to get there,” Lang told northeastNOW. “But this is strictly a convenience thing.”

Residents will still be able to pay with cheque, debit card, or cash at city hall as well.

“So, this is just a convenience for our citizens at really a minimal cost, I would say, for this convenience,” Lang said. “Something I’m glad to see to be honest.”

As of the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 15, residents can make payments via credit card.
