Nipawin Election

Nipawin’s deputy fire chief looking for seat on town council

Oct 14, 2020 | 5:02 PM

The Town of Nipawin has 10 people vying for seats on council in the upcoming election, including Bruce Pihowich.

Pihowich moved back to the community in the 1980s and worked in the heavy commercial industry, worked for Pinecrest Lumber, and is now self-employed as a locksmith in Nipawin. He said running for council is a way for him to participate in the community.

“Maybe I can make a difference, maybe I won’t,” Pihowich told northeastNOW. “I don’t know until I try.”

Pihowich is also involved with the Nipawin Fire Department and is currently the deputy fire chief. He recently served as acting fire chief before David Balding was hired. Pihowich said being on council would be a bit different than working in the department as he wouldn’t be able to make decisions in the same manner on council as he would in the department.

“I’m just another voice on a seat,” he said. “And hopefully I can help make the right decisions.”

If elected, Pihowich said he’d like to help bring in more businesses to Nipawin. He said doing so would hopefully help keep some younger adults in the town, instead on moving away to the bigger cities.

Pihowich said he doesn’t believe in politics too much, but he doesn’t want to be a bystander and hopefully bring some “common sense” to the decision making table.

“I don’t have an agenda or anything,” he said. “I just want to try and help the town evolve a little more.”

Voters head to the polls on Nov. 9.
