Melfort Curling Club set for COVID-19 cautious season

The ice is in, and the rocks are cooling off, curling season is right around the corner in Melfort.

CurlSask and Curling Canada each released guidelines earlier this year to get the 2020/2021 curling season going, and the Melfort Curling Club is adhering, and is ready to roll. Club Manager Gerald MacGillivray said firstly, they need people to stay home when they’re sick.

“We have lines and everything, just like any store,” MacGillivray said. “If you want to wear a mask you can, you don’t have to. It’s not mandatory.”

Curlers are also asked to do their best to stick to their teams when sitting in the lounge after their games.

Meanwhile, the game itself will also look much different. Only one sweeper is permitted in the ‘fun league’ at the club, and skips are not allowed to sweep at all anymore either. There are also certain spots for curlers to stand when not delivering the rock, and games will be done with staggered start times. MacGillivray said it’s going to be a team effort to make this all work.

“It’s a little different, but it should work if everybody follows the rules,” he said.

MacGillivray added they’ll also have to be smart financially this year, as there are no bonspiels planned as of now. However, the kitchen will be open and he is encouraging people to come for lunch on Tuesday’s and Thursdays.

The hope, according to MacGillivray is that there is light at the end of the tunnel and some events are able to be held later in the season.

The Curling Club is running their normal leagues again this year, with the ‘fun league’ taking place on Monday’s and Tuesday’s, with the ‘Super League’ on Thursdays, and Senior league on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The youth league will run on Wednesdays.

League play begins on Monday, Nov. 2.
