Mustangs handed first loss of season by Hawks
The Melfort Mustangs are no longer perfect in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) regular season.
After starting 2-0-0-0, the Mustangs dropped to 2-1-0-0 on Friday, Nov. 13 as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the Nipawin Hawks at Centennial Arena in Nipawin.
A hard-fought, relatively even first period saw neither team tickle the twine, leaving a 0-0 score after one. That changed in the second as the Hawks got a powerplay just over six minutes in, and they capitalized late in the man advantage as a nice passing play was finished off by Burke Simpson to make it 1-0. Gabe Odowichuk answered for the Mustangs later in the period as on a powerplay of their own, Odowichuk made a nifty toe drag and fired a shot five-hole on Ross Hawryluk to tie the game.
Things stayed at 1-1 for the majority of the third period as well as both teams created chances and both goalies stood tall. That was until one minute remained in the period as Brodie Girod was given a pass in the slot from a battle along the boards and was able to put the puck past Joel Favreau to give the Hawks the 2-1 lead, one they would ultimately hold on to.
