St. Brieux football player’s highlight reel catch wins NFL Canada award

A local high school football player had his highlight reel catch shown across Canada this past weekend.

St. Brieux’s own Hayden Weber was this past week’s NFL Way to Play High School Football Award recipient.

“My mom videos me every game, and we sent the highlight in, and then didn’t really think twice about it. It felt pretty surreal to win, obviously; my mom actually called me and told me I had won, but I thought it was a joke. Turns out it was real, though, which was awesome, and she was just really happy. I was definitely happy, but she might have been even happier than I am, and just my whole family is really proud of me,” Weber told northeastNOW.

“Football really means a lot to me and I’ve gained a lot of confidence through the sport. I just encourage anyone I meet to play, because it’s done so much for me. I hope to continue playing it after I’m done high school, and will definitely be sending some film to some junior and college teams.”

Weber, a Grade 12 student, has mainly been a running back for his seven-plus-year career, but in the video he displayed the characteristics of a number-one wide receiver.

Along with his highlight reel being displayed on TSN’s NFL broadcast, Weber’s school received a $3,000 football equipment grant through Football Canada.

“It feels really good that I can contribute back to my school and give players hope that, even if they’re from a small town, they can still make a big impact in a sport or just through anything, really,” Weber concluded.

The NFL Canada Way to Play Award recognizes standout plays that demonstrate sound football fundamentals, including proper tackling, blocking, footwork, discipline and vision. Each week during the season, one submitted video is selected for a feature.
