Trojans sign 20th player, get first win of season against Wildcats

The Tisdale Trojans roster looks to now be full for the 2020/2021 Saskatchewan U18 AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) season after the club signed their 20th player earlier in the week.

Jackson Smith joins the Trojans from the Regina Vics AA program. The forward is in his final year of U18 hockey and Trojans Head Coach Dennis Kubat said he’s a player that just needed a chance.

“He’s had some tough luck with other AAA programs,” Kubat said. “And he’s going to be hungry to show what he can do.”

Smith spent the previous two seasons with the Vics, and scored 38 goals, and added 17 assists for 55 points. To begin the 2020/2021 season, Smith already has three goals and two assists in three games. Smith also was used as a call-up for the Regina Pat Canadian’s the last two seasons, putting up three points in seven games.

“Just adds to our depth when we’re healthy,” Kubat told northeastNOW. “We’re hoping that we can roll four lines that can all score.”

Smith is also a former fourth-round-pick of the Nipawin Hawks in the 2018 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) draft.

Due to the COVID rules, Smith is unable to join the Trojans this weekend as they take on the Warman Wildcats.

Meanwhile, the Trojans were 0-1 to start the season after their most recent pair of games were cancelled due to snow. Kubat said they are only trying to control what they can control, and that’s things like work ethic and getting better everyday.

“We haven’t kind of played our best hockey yet,” he said. “And we’re just excited to get going again this weekend.”

With the Trojans losing their opening game of the season, and unable to win in their two pre-season games, Kubat said there is a bit of pressure on the team to get that first win saying “winning cures a lot of things,”. Well, they got that win on Friday, Nov. 13 in Warman as they defeated the Wildcats 5-2.

Carter Briltz and Jacob Cossette each had a goal and an assist in the win, while Cole Tanchuk had two assists. Kylynn Olafson, Clay Sleeva, and Harper Lolacher all scored for the Trojans as well. Tisdale and Warman are back at it on Saturday, Nov. 14 in Tisdale at the RecPlex.
