Nipawin Winterlights still shining in December amid pandemic

Nov 25, 2020 | 12:56 PM

A mainstay of Nipawin’s holiday season won’t shut off its lights amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

Nipawin Winterlights will run during the first three Fridays in December. The drive-thru light display at Nipawin and District Regional Park has a few changes for 2020 to limit in-person contact, but they’re essential full of displayers, including a few new faces.

“There are no wiener roasts or sleigh rides… but that won’t take away the enjoyment of driving through with your family,” Susan Westgard, one of the Nipawin Winterlights organizers said. “It’s absolutely gorgeous. Even with all the snow, it makes all the aesthetics way more beautiful to see, especially at night.”

Westgard and her fellow organizers remind spectators to remain in their vehicles throughout the drive-thru, drive slowly, and turn off their headlights if possible.

Entrance is free but a donation barrel is located at the exit, with funds going back to the Nipawin and District Regional Park. The only cost is a small one for new displayers who will need a sign at their site.

“This is an event you can do and stay in your vehicles with your family and contacts,” Westgard said. “We encourage people to support the businesses in town; buy hot chocolate or coffee from the businesses they like to purchase those from and come out for a drive to the park.”

Nipawin Winterlights takes place on Dec. 4, 11, and 18 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Nipawin and District Regional Park.
