Northern Lights Woodcarvers create snow carving to represent ‘Play Melfort’

The Northern Lights Woodcarvers have taken their skills to the snow.

The group has been working this week on a snow carving in front of the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort.

Carver Al Jardine had the idea for the carving with all of the snow that fell in November.

“We have snow for the first time in many years this early in the season while the weather is still nice,” Jardine said. “The idea was to do the sculpture here because we need some equipment to haul the snow and fill the box.”

The City of Melfort got on board with the idea for the carving and helped out by hauling snow from around the KVC for the 8×8 cube. The snow was compacted into a box form on Monday for the base which needed to sinter to become solid.

The frame was taken off and the carving of the snow began on Thursday.

The sculpture includes skate boarders, a hockey player, cross country skiers, and figure skaters.

“These are silhouettes of Play Melfort,” Jardine said. “Things that are able to be done or are being done around Melfort.”

The carving is expected to last a month or two at which time the carvers will go back and cut it down to size and do another panel.

“If the weather stays cooperative, we can just keep working and end up with a 3D form when we get done,” Jardine said. “It will be kind of an all winter project.”

Another carving is in the works over the weekend as well with the snow that has fallen off of the existing sculpture.

“We haven’t any idea yet what it is going to be yet so we will see how that turns out,” Jardine said.

The group working on Thursday included Ken Luthi, Doris Sheldon, Colleen Kirkham, Stan Ryhorchuk, and Henry Wick.

Program Coordinator for the City of Melfort Kathy Gray extended a big thanks to the dedicated group who took the time this week to make the sculpture happen. she also reiterated her appreciation for the time they also spent over the summer at Spruce Haven Park carving spirits into the trees at the Fairy Forest.

“They are just such a great group and we are so lucky to have them here,” Gray said.

In addition to being able to view the sculpture in front of the KVC, the city is also selling Christmas ornaments inside.
