Goudy Talks Throne Speech

Health supports, tax credits and rebates highlights for Goudy in throne speech

Nov 30, 2020 | 5:55 PM

The throne speech was delivered in Regina on Monday, Nov. 30 and covered a number of topics including COVID-19, and election promises.

For Melfort MLA Todd Goudy, he told northeastNOW there was lots of great energy with the swearing-in recently, as well as Monday’s throne speech. This was Goudy’s first full turnover of Parliament as he was elected in a 2018 byelection. He said it was fun to see all the MLAs swear in.

As for the throne speech itself, Goudy said the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic was a major topic in the speech, but outside of that, Goudy said supports in the health and human services sectors was great to see. Those included talk regarding the promise of government funding the cost of insulin pumps, and glucose monitors for those in Saskatchewan under the age of 18, as well as more supports for those on the autism spectrum in the province. Goudy said being on the human services committee in the past, he heard parents’ concerns over topics like these.

“Just having been in human services, to hear the requests of the parents,” he said. “To see that fulfilled while you’re sitting in government; that is a highlight of my being here so far.”

Meanwhile, more specific to the Melfort, and northeast region, Goudy said there was mention of the CT scanner that is set to come to Melfort in early 2021, which has been a decade plus promise by government.

Goudy also mentioned those in Melfort and the area would like the home renovation tax credit, as well as the 10 per cent rebate on SaskPower bills. He said with Melfort being a growing community, it will be a way for people to add equity into their homes.

“Right down to the furthest reaches of the province, people are going to do renovations where they live,” Goudy said. “And so I’m excited about seeing how that plays out.”

From here government will sit for a couple of weeks, albeit with some new protocols in place including masking and distancing. Goudy said he looks forward to meeting the new MLAs, and working with them.

“I think in any session, that’s important to do, is to function well for the people as a government,” he said. “And so I’m looking forward to see how that’s going to function.”

Goudy wouldn’t tip his cap as to any bills or specific topics that might be coming down the pipe, but said there are some “good things” in the works.
