Saskatchewan Housing Benefit to reach more renters

The federal and provincial governments are stepping up a housing funding program.

The Saskatchewan Housing Benefit was created in April to help low-income residents cover their rents. According to a media release Monday, the program is being expanded to reach more renters in Saskatchewan, providing a monthly payment to people who spend half or more of their income on housing. The program previously only covered those living in community housing, but has been expanded to cover private rentals.

“Under the National Housing Strategy, our government is taking steps to ensure that every Canadian has a safe and affordable place to call home,” said Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. “Many renters need long-term, predictable assistance to pay their rent and we are providing that through the Saskatchewan Housing Benefit. With this announcement, we are taking significant action to continue to build strong communities where Saskatchewan families can prosper and thrive.”

The governments will split the $6.8 million cost for the program this year.

“I’m pleased to announce the Saskatchewan Housing Benefit is now available to renters in the private market to help cover part of their rent, allowing individuals to live more comfortably and securely,” Social Services Minister Lori Carr said. “I encourage Saskatchewan people who are eligible to apply for the program so they can have an easier time making ends meet.”

The Housing Benefit is also tied to the recipient, not the housing unit. People will continue to receive the payments when they move, as long as their housing costs remain 50 per cent or more of their income.
