Melfort Trade Alliance recognized as Chamber of Commerce

Melfort now has a Chamber of Commerce.

Melfort Trade Alliance (MTA) President Tyler Fahlman said the board has worked tirelessly over the last year to get to their goal of being recognized as a chamber.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Saskatchewan in March, the board was unsure if they would achieve their goal this quickly.

“The information that was coming out from the Saskatchewan Chamber as well as other Chambers for businesses, we knew we had to get our act together and get it done,” Fahlman said. “With lots of long evenings and meetings, we were able to get it accomplished.”

With things slowing down a bit for local business owners, the project was a welcome distraction from the pandemic and the restrictions in place, according to Fahlman.

“Luckily our team, we are all from completely different lines of work and all are busy at different times of the year,” Fahlman said. “There is always someone to grab the ball and carry it along when others have to attend to their businesses needs first.”

The MTA will now be known as the Melfort Trade Alliance Chamber of Commerce going forward.

“We are going to have a few more changes coming along in the near future but just getting things rolling,” Fahlman said.

The previous chamber ceased operations in 2018 when it ran into financial difficulty.

The board will meet on Thursday night for their first meeting of 2021.

“It is invitation only but if anyone wants to request to be a guest at the meeting, they can reach out,” Fahlman said.

New businesses and experienced business are encouraged to become part of the chamber, which Fahlman said will have its benefits.

“For the most part, we have noticed that the community has switched more to shop local and it has really helped out our business confidence in our community and sustainability of our businesses in the area,” Fahlman said. “We hope everyone just realizes that there is a lot of good, quality products here and driving to major centres to get a product you can get locally, isn’t necessary.”
