Empowering Women

Virtual Women’s Day celebration expands reach beyond northeast Sask.

Mar 3, 2021 | 1:22 PM

International Women’s Day is on Monday, March 8 and North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) is celebrating in a big way.

An all-day online event will feature presentations on the eight dimensions of wellness.

NEOSS Executive Director Louise Schweitzer told northeastNOW it is important to empower women on the regular basis but especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Recognizing the importance of taking care of our mental, physical, social, emotional, spiritual well-being as we navigate the pandemic,” Schweitzer said. “Many of us are caregivers for ourselves and others around us, so we feel it important to focus on women and their self-care in all aspects of wellness.”

NEOSS typically does run some sort of event or promotion on International Women’s Day to recognize the women in the communities they serve but with having a virtual event, it can be much farther reaching.

“This is not strictly for northeast, anyone that is on Facebook has the opportunity to join us,” Schweitzer said. “We already have over 200 individuals registered so a great way to connect possibly internationally.”

Register by calling the NEOSS office at 306-752-9464 or by sending a message to their Facebook page. Those registered will have access to the private group where the presentations will take place live on Monday as well as some giveaways that are already underway.

“They will all be recorded as well so they can be viewed later at your own convenience if you can’t make it to see them on Monday,” Schweitzer said.

Melody Motors in Melfort and Grounded Goodness in St. Brieux have sponsored the event to allow it to be a free event.

The day gets underway at 7 a.m. with Chiropractor Dr. Kim Burgis doing an early morning meditation and speaking at 9 a.m. is Miss World Canada 2020 Svetlana Mamaeva will discuss financial wellness.

Also on board for the day is Britt Meyers of Renew U Fitness in Melfort to speak about nutritional wellness.

“My business is designed around the whole aspect of women supporting women to become the best version of themselves, so I was so glad to be asked to be part of it,” Meyers said.

The importance of having a balanced diet will be the focus for Meyers in the 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. time slot as she shares tips, tricks and advice from her personal and professional journey.

“You can still nourish your body with whole, healthy food and still enjoy the foods you love,” Meyers said. “Balance is key when looking to achieve sustainable results in your health journey.”

Ditching the diet mentality and the guilt that comes with it is something that Meyers practices with her clients on the regular basis.

The afternoon kicks off with a presentation on emotional and mental wellness from Laura Lawrence of MindBody Balance Therapies in Melfort from noon to 1 p.m.

Lawrence said she will present on growth mindset and building resiliency with some mindfulness practices.

“It is a topic that is pretty timely with what we have gone through the last year with restrictions and the pandemic,” Lawrence said. “I will share parts of my own journey and things that I have done to become more resilient.”

Environmental Wellness will be covered by Kayla Mowery-Taylor of Daisies Dreams and Decor in Melfort from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

From 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., SpaFit by Linda is offering the physical wellness portion with power hour hosted by Heather Hudak.

Amanda Perrott of Grounded Goodness will have the evening presentation from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on social wellness which will cover connection and belonging.
