The Tisdale Trojans will have a new member of their coaching staff when the 2021/2022 season kicks off.

Gavin Brandl has been hired by the U18 AAA squad as an assistant coach after spending the last two seasons as the head coach for the Northeast Wolfpack U15 AA team. Brandl told northeastNOW if he was going to leave the Wolfpack, he wanted to make sure the values of the team he was joining, would match with his.

“I think [head coach] Dennis [Kubat], and what he’s trying to build here is a pretty perfect fit,” Brandl said. “And so, I didn’t have any hesitation knowing what I know about Dennis and the program to put my name in.”

Brandl came to Saskatchewan prior to the 2018/2019 season as he was named an assistant coach with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) Nipawin Hawks. He was there until the end of January 2019 before taking the position with the Wolfpack the next season.

Originally from Alberta, Brandl started his coaching career in the Junior B ranks of his home province, and then coached U18 in B.C. for a period of time. He said his goal isn’t just to chase the next job, but to make an impact.

“If I can have a platform to help develop young people, that’s really what drives me,” he said. “And I have that here, I’m happy here.”

Outside of coaching, Brandl has also helped the Clutch program with some of their hockey camps in Melfort and Tisdale. He’s also done some individual private training in Tisdale and Nipawin.

Trojans head coach Dennis Kubat said Brandl will be a big asset to the team and will help on the offensive side of the game.

“[Gavin] is a huge believer in development and allowing for creativity,” Kubat said. “Things we value as part of our program.”

Brandl said he’s excited to join the Trojans and continue building the program with Kubat. Brandl added with the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s somewhat of a clean slate through the Saskatchewan U18 AAA Hockey League and there’s lots of unknowns as to what teams are going to be good in 2021/2022.
