The Saskatchewan Country Music Awards were held virtually this year as country music in the province was celebrated.

Dozens of awards were handed out, including the Music Director of the Year which went to Cal Gratton of 105 CJVR in Melfort. Gratton told northeastNOW that promoting country music in Saskatchewan is a team effort and he’s happy to be a part of it.

“We’ve seen such a big growth in country music in this province as far as artists are concerned over the last little while,” he said. “And I’m just happy to be a part of doing that little bit of promotion that I can do.”

Gratton has won the award a number of times before and when asked how many, he laughed that he had no idea.

“It doesn’t get old,” Gratton said. “I am so happy that the members of the SCMA continue to vote for me and to support me.”

Normally, the awards would be held in person and Gratton said he missed not being able to get together and chat with the other nominees. He said it’s good to be a part of that fellowship in the country music world in Saskatchewan.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, Gratton said not much has changed for him over the past year. He said normally there would be a lot of artists would be coming into the station, but that has moved to mainly online.

Gratton also gave credit to everyone nominated and said that Saskatchewan country music is in a great spot.

105 CJVR also won Station of the Year in a Secondary Market, an award that the station has received a number of times as well.

“The success of our station and recognition we receive is largely due to our staff,” said station manager Linda Rheaume. “Everyone plays a very important part in us continually being the best country station in Saskatchewan. Whether it’s the news and sports, community announcements and event coverage or the music we play, everyone works together to always be the best.”
