RCMP and partners rescue group of stranded ATV riders

A group that was stranded out on ATVs in the Candle Lake area have been found safe thanks to rescue crews.

On April 18, at around 11:30 p.m., Nipawin RCMP along with partner agencies began efforts to locate an individual and two youths who were stranded in a marsh line.

The group indicated in their phone call to RCMP that they had food, water, and a fire and were equipped to spend the night.

With search efforts underway, a volunteer aviation group, the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) spotted the group walking at around 9:15 a.m., and dropped them a note to inform them that help was on the way.

Members of the Nipawin detachment and Ministry of Environment Conservation Officers headed out on ATVs to rescue the group who was cold and tired. No injuries were sustained by any members of the group.

In a release, Sgt. Dave Sanderson from the RCMP North District Management Team said this incident is an example of how important it is to pack proper survival supplies.

“These people had supplies with them, and that helped them keep up their strength and find their way out of the bush safely,” Sanderson said. “It’s good to always be prepared, especially in spring.”

He added that while the ice and snow are melting, it can cause unpredictable conditions, and the nights are cold if you end up stranded.
