Mustangs acquire two players from AJHL in trade

Sep 14, 2021 | 3:26 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have acquired 2002-born forwards Dawson Leroux, and Trenton Curtis from the Olds Grizzly’s of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. In exchange, the Mustangs had to send the rights to 2003-born forward Cameron Rimstad, as well as a player development fee.

Leroux, from Lethbridge, Alta., has played parts of the last three seasons with the Grizzly’s starting in 2018/19 as a callup, scoring one goal in four games of action. As a 17-year-old in 2019/2020, Leroux scored four goals and added six assists in 50 games for the Grizzly’s. He also had one goal in five playoff games that season. Last year, in 14 games, Leroux tallied three goals and three assists, good for a tie for third on the team in points.

Curtis, a Bethune, Saskatchewan product, returns to the province after one season in Olds, Alta. where he scored five goals in 13 games, which lead the team in the COVID shortened season. Prior to his time in the AJHL, Curtis spent parts of three seasons playing for the Tisdale Trojans in the SMAAHL. Across all competitions, Curtis scored 40 goals and added 73 assists for 113 points in 108 games played. That included a trip to the Telus Cup in 2019 where the Trojans won Bronze.

“With Dawson and Trenton, we add experience, skill, and compete to our lineup,” said Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins. “Both players will be a great addition at both ends of the ice for our team and we are excited to see what they can do in a Mustang uniform.”

Both players will be in the lineup for tonight’s preseason contest in La Ronge against the Ice Wolves.

Rimstad, a 2003-born forward, played in four games for the Mustangs in 2020/21, scoring one goal. The Mustangs send thanks to Cameron for his time with the team.
