Town of Nipawin re-introduces mask requirement for all town facilities

Effective Sept. 15 until at least Oct. 12, there will be required indoor masking at all town owned and operated facilities in Nipawin, for all employees and public entering these facilities.

The decision comes after council voted on the issue on Sept. 13 at their monthly meeting, in response to the surge of COVID cases in the area and across the province.

Lesley Richer, Chief Financial Officer for the Town of Nipawin mentioned that the health and safety of employees and the community remains the town’s top priority and broke down how this decision came to be.

“The safety of our residents and our employees are of top priority for the town and with some increases in cases in our local area, council wanted to discuss the idea of requiring indoor masking at our facilities for both the public and our town staff.”

Richer also spoke about why council felt that it was important for this mandate to be in effect for at least a month and why Oct. 12 was chosen as the possible end date.

“The idea was to choose a date in the near future that we would re-look at the policy, just in case the situation has changed in the area, but we felt that it would be needed for at least a month.”

This policy reflects a similar state that some communities had already implemented that Richer said Nipawin and other communities had likely kept a close eye on.

“We had seen some other communities also decide to initiate masking in their communities and it’s likely something on everyone’s radar, but each community will take a different approach, as it’s not mandated by the provincial government.”

In the release sent by the Town of Nipawin, other details about the mask mandate included children under two and employees working alone in their office not needing a mask, people engaging in physical activity or eating and drinking will be allowed to remove their mask, and signs about the requirement will be posted at all public entrances.
