Mustangs battle back, defeat Terriers on road

Sep 29, 2021 | 11:58 AM

It may have not been the prettiest of wins, but it was a win for Melfort Mustangs on Tuesday night as they downed the Yorkton Terriers 5-3 in Yorkton.

Mustangs assistant coach Trevor Logan said they had to adjust to the physicality that Yorkton brought early on, and adjust to how the game was being played.

“As much as it was maybe a little bit scrambly at times,” he said. “(The) puck was bouncing a lot tonight. Seems like these last two games, pucks been bouncing a lot, so that’s something we’ve been struggling with a little bit, so we’ll take the two points, go home and be happy.”

The Mustangs were down 3-1 late in the second period as Tyson Perkins, Carson Henry, and Maddux Nollski all scored for Yorkton. Boston Maxwell had the lone Melfort goal to that point.

However, with less than a minute to play in the second, Marco Lopez made it a 3-2 game in his first game back from injury, giving the Mustangs some momentum heading into period number three.

Ty Albrecht would tie things up about five minutes in, and while it stayed tied for a while, Melfort continued to pressure and were able to capitalize on a few powerplays. Tye Scherger and Ben Tkachuk both tallied markers on the man advantage and all of a sudden Melfort was up 5-3 and held on for their second win of the season.

Logan said that the comeback is a nice confidence builder after not being able to fire a few pucks into the net early on in the game.

“We stuck with it and we kept getting our chances and we buried them finally, and it worked out,” Logan said.

Melfort is back at it on Friday, Oct. 1 as they visit the Nipawin Hawks for the first matchup between the rivals this regular season. Friday’s game can be heard on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett starting at 7:15 p.m. with the pre-game show.
