Mustangs win streak ends after home loss to Stars

Oct 14, 2021 | 9:08 AM

The Melfort Mustangs win streak is over at five games after a 4-1 loss to the Battlefords North Stars on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the Northern Lights Palace.

It was also the first time in six games the Mustangs didn’t record a point.

“We just didn’t play our game,” said Mustang forward Seth McCulloch. “We kind of played their kind of run and gun type game. That’s not what we do.”

McCulloch scored in the second period to cut the North Star lead in half, but it’s as close as the Mustangs would get.

Steven Kesslering, Easton Rask, Colby Bear, and Jake Southgate all scored for Battlefords. Only Kesslering’s came on the powerplay, but the North Stars did have seven powerplays compared to the Mustangs three.

McCulloch said a lack of discipline definitely came into play.

“We’ve got to stay out of the box,” he said. “You can’t be killing all night if you want to score goals, so for sure, that’s got to change.”

Joel Favreau stopped 35 of 38 shots he saw for the Mustangs in what was his first loss of the season.

Fortunately for the Mustangs, they’re back on the ice on Friday when they take on the Estevan Bruins in Estevan. That’s followed by a Saturday meeting in Weyburn.
