Mustangs Fall to Broncos

Mustangs can’t contain Kurki, drop second straight game to Broncos

The Melfort Mustangs have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, after a 5-2 loss in Humboldt on Saturday against the Broncos.

Humboldt held a 1-0 lead after one period of play, and things didn’t seem out of reach for the Mustangs. They were able to tie the game up halfway through the second period thanks to Tye Evans first career SJHL goal, but things turned after that.

A tough turnover sent Logan Kurki in on a breakaway, giving the Broncos a 2-1 lead.

“Our momentum kind of went after that,” said Mustangs assistant coach Trevor Logan. “Then we were chasing a little bit, and with a team like this, you can’t give them powerplay opportunities all night and you can’t give them odd-man rushes, they’re going to end up in the back of our net.”

Kurki would score another one, this time on the powerplay, followed by his hat-trick goal, all within six-and-a-half minutes in the second period of action, giving Humboldt the 4-1 lead after two periods.

Melfort would fight in the third, making it 4-2 at one point, courtesy of Dawson Leroux’s fourth of the year, but that’s as close as the Mustangs would get.

Kurki would earn an empty-net goal for his fourth of the net, sealing the game for Humboldt.

“I think the positive of both nights is I don’t think we gave up,” Logan said. “We got ourselves down in a hole and we didn’t give up tonight.”

Melfort will get back on the horse on Tuesday, Oct. 26 when they will visit the Notre Dame Hounds.
