Mustangs drop first of two to Mills, go for revenge in Melville

The Melfort Mustangs dropped their second straight game Friday night, losing 2-1 at home to the visiting Melville Millionaires.

Despite scoring 10 minutes into the game, having six power plays, and putting 31 shots on net, one goal was all the Mustangs could muster in their first meeting of the season with the Mills.

“It was a little bit of everything as to why we only put one in; I feel like we could have bore down a bit more around the net and just been a little more desperate for the puck in certain situations. There were definitely chances to be had and pucks lying in the high-danger areas at times, and not that we weren’t trying; we were just a little bit light on it at times,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“On the power play, we put up some hope plays out there, and they frustrated us a bit and clogged up the middle well, so we gotta adjust. Just gotta get back on the drawing board and be better on Saturday.”

These two clubs will face one another again this evening, as they travel to Melville, for the second game of the home-and-home set.

Melfort is 0 and 1 on the road this year, while the Millionaires are 0 and 1 at home, as each team seeks their first win in their respective categories.

“We’re looking for a bit quicker decision-making and some better support options when we have the puck; they play pretty smothering hockey and pin you well in the corners. Whether it’s support, making a play, or just being harder on it, we just have to be better in all facets,” Huxley added.

“As far as scoring more, we also just have to make life harder on the goaltender we’re facing. Their netminder played really well on Friday, but I think we left a few chances out there to be desired. If we get more shots on net and then are ready to track down the rebounds and get traffic in front, it’s obviously harder to stop the pucks you don’t see, so we just gotta get in front of him.”
