Mustangs Fall to Ice Wolves

Overtime heartbreak for Mustangs against Ice Wolves

Nov 11, 2021 | 1:59 PM

The Melfort Mustangs dropped a tough one on Wednesday, Nov. 10 to the La Ronge Ice Wolves at the Northern Lights Palace.

The game needed overtime and saw the Ice Wolves come out with a 3-2 victory.

Mustangs Assistant Coach Trevor Logan said they had plenty of chances that they didn’t finish on in the contest.

“We probably could’ve taken control of that game at many points,” he said. “And we just didn’t. Maybe it’s a bit of rust and we’ve been off for a week, and a couple of guys coming back from injuries, so you hope that’s just rust and we need to find that sense of urgency that we just don’t have at times.”

The Ice Wolves got out to an early 2-0 lead in this one as they would score 19 seconds, and 2:19 into the hockey game. Although, the Mustangs would get back into the contest as leading goal scorer Curtis Hammond scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season, both in the first period.

“[He’s] just come in and scored goals, and continued to score goals,” Logan said. “But if you look at it he’s shooting the puck, he’s leading our team by a large stat in shots on net, and that’s what happens when you put shots on net.”

No goals were scored in the rest of regulation and this game was destined for overtime.

Melfort controlled the puck in the one minute of overtime that was played, but one a turnover to La Ronge’s Nolan Doell would seal the deal and the 3-2 win for the Ice Wolves.

The Mustangs fall to 11-6-1-1 on the season and are back in action on Friday, Nov. 12 against the Flin Flon Bombers. That game can be heard on 105CJVR with Mat Barrett.
