Mustangs erase two goal defecit, tame Terriers in Yorkton

Nov 21, 2021 | 10:00 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are slowly righting the ship once again.

On Saturday, Nov. 20, the Mustangs defeated the Yorkton Terriers by a 3-2 score in a shootout, giving Melfort their second straight win over Yorkton in the last seven days.

This game seemed to have it all beginning in the second period. After what was a relatively uneventful first frame, the second started with a bang. Just over a minute in, the Mustangs got a power play chance, one they couldn’t capitalize on. However, shortly thereafter, the Mustangs were called for a penalty of their own, which would have out the game to four-on-four for a brief stretch although Mustangs head coach Trevor Blevins let his thoughts on the call be heard, which earned him a bench minor, putting the Mustangs down two players for a full two minutes. Parker Jasper and Clay Sleeva scored for Yorkton on the power play chances and all of a sudden, 4:34 into the second period Yorkton led 2-0.

Mustangs assistant coach Trevor Logan says the team responded well down by a pair.

“The boys actually kept themselves cool, regrouped on the bench by themselves and stuck with it,” Logan said. “So that’s great, it’s awesome to see.”

Marco Lopez scored at the 5:09 mark of the period, and then again at the 12:45 mark to tie things up heading into the third period.

Each team had their chances in the third, including a few power play chances, but James Venne stood tall for Melfort, and Kael DePape held the fort for Yorkton.

That led to overtime which saw both teams even get some time on the power play, but no result would come of it, leading to a shootout.

“It was mostly a defensive game,” Logan said. “And you knew that the one play would be the difference all night, you could sense that. So, the guys stuck with it and they made good plays. We got the two points and we’re happy.”

Tye Evans and Seth McCulloch scored for Melfort in the four round shootout, while J.D. Hall was the lone goal scorer for Yorkton.

The victory also gives Melfort their first back-to-back wins since Oct. 15 and 16. Logan said it feels like the train is slowly getting back on the tracks.

“We got something happening here, and we hope we can continue rolling,” he said.

Melfort is back at it on Wednesday, Nov. 24 as they host the Melville Millionaires, followed by a southern swing on Nov. 26 and 27 in Weyburn and Estevan.
